When I first bought my computer it was so fast, but now it seems slow, what has happened?

Well, there are a number of reasons why your computer seems to have slowed down. When your computer was new it had very few files on the hard drive and the files you had were in a nice and neat order on the system. Over time, as you use your system you continually add files and programs which can fill up a hard drive making it run slower. Programs love to write and save temporary files, hundreds of them, even thousands of them if you like to surf the internet. Thousands of little tiny files just filling up your hard drive. Once a hard drive has less than 15% free (available space) it will bog the whole system down. Every now and again it is very helpful to do a computer version of ‘spring cleaning’. An examination of the programs installed will usually result in a cleanup of programs most people didn’t even know they had, much less want, just deleting these ‘nuisance’ programs can help an ailing system. One program can have dozens or even hundreds of files associated with it, having dozens of programs that are unneeded can result in a spider web of processes (mini-apps) that serve to slow down the real work at hand, which translates to that mouse pointer spinning and spinning endlessly while you wait for your web page to load. Or even worse, system crashes which can result costing hundreds of dollars in repairs and the loss of your computer for days on end.
